Start with the guest who has the least flexibility
Ask about ingredients, access, timing and budget before sending a shortlist. These are practical requirements, not details to sort out after payment. Contact the restaurant about exact needs and wait for an answer before committing.
For a surprise dinner, confirm those requirements discreetly. Do not assume the guest wants a long tasting menu or will enjoy every ingredient. If choosing dishes is important to them, consider an a la carte meal from the restaurant directory and check its current menu.
Match the plan to the occasion
An anniversary
Decide whether privacy, a particular cuisine or an unhurried evening matters most. Ask about the actual seating arrangement if a quiet conversation is essential; photographs cannot establish noise levels. Compare Alinea and Oriole for their different seating formats. Oriole's official reservation page distinguishes dining-room and kitchen-table options. Oriole: reservation calendar and seating options.
A birthday with friends
Set a per-person spending limit that includes drinks and charges, then settle the guest count. Ask about party-size limits, cake policies and any celebration requests directly. A note in the booking does not guarantee a special course, decoration or private table.
A first tasting menu
Discuss the fixed progression and time commitment with the whole party. Ask what can change and what cannot. Ever is worth comparing if a published duration helps you plan: its FAQ allows about 2.5 hours. That is an estimate, not a promised finish time. Ever: booking, access and service-charge FAQ.
A few useful format comparisons
Kasama separates daytime counter service from its reservation-only Filipino-inspired tasting-menu dinner. Choose the service that matches the occasion before arranging the visit. A bakery stop and an evening tasting menu are different plans. Kasama: menus and service formats.
Smyth currently distinguishes the Smyth Menu from its longer Chef's Menu, and says the Chef's Menu cannot accommodate dietary restrictions. It announces a single extended menu from November 5, 2026. Resolve the date and dietary fit before treating the longer menu as an upgrade. Smyth: menus and November booking change.
These comparisons help narrow a shortlist; they are not rankings for romance, hospitality or food quality. Our restaurant pages are researched guides and do not report firsthand meals.
Give dinner enough room in the schedule
If you have theatre tickets or another fixed end time, ask the restaurant whether the proposed booking can work. Include travel between venues, coat collection and time to pay. Do not infer a finish time from another restaurant's course count.
For an out-of-town celebration, consider dinner on an evening after arrival so a delayed flight is less likely to disrupt the reservation. Save the address and confirmation where both guests can find them.
Make the final decision together
- Choose two restaurants that meet everyone's dietary and access needs.
- Compare the full cost using the budget worksheet.
- Pick the setting and menu format you actually want.
- Check dates and payment terms with the reservation checklist.
- Contact the restaurant about any occasion request before assuming it is available.
A useful message is: "We are planning a birthday dinner for four on our selected date. One guest avoids these ingredients, and we need step-free access. Can you confirm whether this experience works for us, and whether our celebration request is possible?" Add the exact details before sending it.
